NOT FORGIVING

(Message by Tanny Keng)

What does "not forgiving" mean?

1. Not forgiving will torture you

a) 33 Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ 34 In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. 35 “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” (Matthew 18:33-35 NIV)

2. Not forgiving causes you to entertain thoughts of revenge

a) 29 Do not say, “I’ll do to them as they have done to me; I’ll pay them back for what they did.” (Proverbs 24: 29 NIV)

3. Not forgiving means you won't be forgiven by God

a) 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. (Matthew 6:15 NIV)

4. Not forgiving delays the answer to your prayers

a) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” (Mark 11:25 NIV)

5. Not forgiving means you see the failures of others, but not your own

a) 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. (Matthew 7:3-5 NIV)

6. Not forgiving means you are walking in darkness

a) 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them. (1 John 2:11 NIV)

7. Not forgiving means you are not pursuing what is best for your marriage

a) 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. (1 Thessalonians 5:15 NIV)
