SALT & LIGHT
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Salt & Light
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16 NIV)
1. Why did Jesus use "salt & light"?
a) Salt
i) If a seasoning has no flavour, it has no value. If believers make no effort to affect the world around them, they are of little value to God. If we are too much like the world, we are worthless. Believers should not blend in with everyone else. Instead, we should affect others positively, just as seasoning brings out the best flavour in food. We should do that, shouldn't we?
b) Light
i) Can you hide a city that is sitting on top of a hill? Its light at night can been seen for miles. If we live for Christ, we will glow like lights, showing others what Christ is like.
ii) On the other hand, we can hide our light by
@1. being quiet when we should speak.
@2. going along with the crowd and not the cloud.
@3. denying the light.
@4. letting sin dim our light.
@5. not explaining our light to others.
@6. ignoring the needs of others.
iii) Be a becon of light - don't shut your light off from the rest of the world.
2. Prayer focus
a) Pay that we seize the opportunity when it knocks at our door.
b) Pray that we show other people our light by the way to Jesus Christ - either by our words or our actions. A little of our salt and a little of our light makes the difference!
The End ...
