SPRINGS OF WATER
1. Introductiona) Springs of water
i) 8This is what the Lord says: “In the time of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances, 9to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’ “They will feed beside the roads and find pasture on every barren hill. 10They will neither hunger nor thirst, nor will the desert heat or the sun beat down on them. He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water. 11I will turn all my mountains into roads, and my highways will be raised up. (Isaiah 49:8-11 NIV)
ii) Spring is a flow of water from the ground, often a source of stream, pond etc.
b) So we are talking about life giving water from God himself.
2. Spring of water of life
a) 5He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. (Revelation 21:5-7 NIV)
b) 17The Spirit and the bride say, “Come!” And let the one who hears say, “Come!” Let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:17 NIV)
3. Spring of water welling up to eternal life
a) When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food).
b) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritan).
c) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
d) “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?”
e) Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
f) The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have keep coming here to draw water.” (John 4: 7 - 15)
4. What is eternal life?
1) Most people think of eternal life as living forever in heaven. But it's more than that. Eternal life also is here on earth. It is the kind of life coveted by many and only God himself can impart it to us.
2) Probably the best-known Bible reference to eternal life is John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life."
3) In that verse, "eternal" translates a word in the original language that means "agelong." The idea is of life that never ends. It points to an afterlife where there is no death. But it also is talking about eternal life that we can enjoy on earth. It is God's kind of life.
4) Jesus whom God raised from the dead made a promise to people who have eternal life: "I Myself will raise him up on the last day” (John 6:40). That gives you hope for the future, even if life right now is really hard.
5) Eternal life means escaping the power of death. This life is ruled by death. Everything that lives will die. Physically, there is no way to escape it. But death wasn't the end of the story for Jesus. God brought Him back to life. In the same way, death isn't the end of the story for us. The Bible says: "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23).
6) "Eternal life" also refers to the quality of this life. Jesus said "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly" (John 10:10). "Abundantly," in the original language, means "more extremely." When ordinary life is routine and boring, Jesus gives you a new life that is extremely meaningful and exciting.
7) Eternal life is God's own life, living in you. If we want to know what that means, look at the kind of life Jesus lived.
8) Eternal life is full and free, like a natural spring that keeps bubbling up fresh, cool water even in the time of serious drought (John 4:14).
9) Most of all, eternal life is the kind of life that results from a close, loving relationship with our heavenly Father and His only Son. “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent" (John 17:3).
10) Eternal life is a life that is full and free and forever. It is peace, joy and assurance. It is comfort, strength and hope. It's never-ending life with God life in heaven after we die, but it's also abundant life here on earth.
11) It is the kind of life all of us really want. It's the kind of life we can never achieve. It's the kind of life God gives us for free when we finally admit how much we need His help.
i) 23For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23 NIV)
ii) 11And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11, 12 NIV)
iii) 14Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” (John 3:14, 15 NIV)
iv) 36Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. (John 3:36 NIV)
v) 6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. (John 14:6 NIV)
5. Come drink of the water
a) 37On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” 39By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. (John 7:37-39 NIV)
b) 1"Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. (Isaiah 55:1 NIV)
c) 3For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour out my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. (Isaiah 44:3 NIV)
d) 28“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. 29Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. (Joel 2:28, 29 NIV)
e) 11The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. (Isaiah 58:11 NIV)
6. Prayer focus
a) Pray for the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb like waterfall to us. (Revelation 22:1)
i) This river of life will once again bring forth newness of life to you. We will experience new things in a new way. Things will not be the same as before. Old things are passed away and behold new things will spring forth.
ii) It will quench our thirst and we will not be thirsty again.
iii) It will well up in us eternal life. We can experience the godly kind of life on earth. It is heaven on earth. We do not need to experience life after death.
iv) Streams of living water will flow from within us. We will learn to prophesy, dream dreams and see visions.
v) We will experience abundant life on earth. Life that is meaningful and fruitful and curses will not be activated in our life again.
vi) We will personally experience the healing power for our sickness, infirmity and lethargy. We will be completely healed and made whole according to our very own design.
b) Pray for the water of life, which is the Holy Spirit.
